Curriculum Philosophy

The American School curriculum has been carefully crafted to promote understanding. It is our goal that students demonstrate their abilities to think critically, problem solve effectively, reason clearly, listen constructively, and speak and write persuasively. Class activities are designed so that the student becomes keen at observing and describing, can build explanations, reason with evidence, consider different viewpoints and perspectives, form conclusions, and make connections. It is our goal to create students that are engaged and active thinkers that can innovate and collaborate in order to creatively solve today’s problems and become agents of change in our community.

Our main mission is to integrate all these curricula into units of inquiry, in which all teachers work collaboratively amongst each other to allow students to create their own questions, conduct their own research, and demonstrate their understanding in a personalized manner through Inquiry Units or PBL units designed to bring out the best in our students: their passion, imagination, and curiosity.

Curriculum from K-12 has been designed to progressively and actively teach students to read and write so that they may deepen their understanding of the world they live in and advocate for theirs and others rights. It is also our goal to create life-long confident learners that will reach their own goals through communicating effectively and persuasively.

Curriculums strive to help students observe, question, describe, take notes, and make connections and conclusions to the physical and natural world around them. STEM units have also taken an important part of our curriculum to engage students in designing solutions using mathematical, scientific, and technological resources to problem-solve creatively.

Curriculum builds character. ASSD believes that to educate well rounded citizens of tomorrow, critical thinking and knowledge are important but fall short. It is important to cultivate in our students a sense of right and wrong, honesty, respect, empathy, integrity, so that they can become agents of much needed change in our world plagued by social injustice, gender inequality, poverty, and pollution. It will be their job to turn our world into a sustainable model community.
