COMMUNITY SERVICE

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

-Mahatma Gandhi

What is Community Service Learning?

"Community service," is defined as "the voluntary action of an individual or group of individuals without pay." Examples of this type of service are conducting food drives, tutoring, and teaching younger children, among others. It is action in the community, involving community members - young people, adults and families - coming together to work on a common interest or community need. Combining the definition of community service and learning and putting it in the context of a community is what community-based service learning is all about.

Why involve students in Community Service Learning?

At the American School of Santo Domingo we strongly believe that participating in the valuable work of helping others enriches the lives of all involved; and that no matter your age, you can make a difference.

Who participates, coordinates and organizes?

All students from 1st to 12th grade participate in the project /area assigned. Their involvement will be determined by their age and taking into account developmentally appropriate activities.

Guidance Department

I am Rosalía Demorizi, Head of the Guidance Department at ASSD. My mission is to work in collaboration with teachers, parents, school administrators and staff to help students succeed. This success, I believe, is attained only when we are able to work coherently together as a team, always putting as our main goal, the well-being of the child. I also believe that for our students to truly flourish, the school environment should be conducive to learning. This is why it is also my responsibility to promote the creation of a safe, healthy and supportive climate that will allow every student and family feel welcome and an important part of our school community. I have a Master of Science degree with a concentration of Advanced Studies in School Psychology from Rochester Institute of Technology.

School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families. Encouraging your child to choose a well-balanced school lunch will teach them to make smart food choices and maintain a
healthy lifestyle.

During lunch times, a teacher is always on duty to help students and to ensure safety.
